Let's explore Sandy Island
Sandy Island is a unique land form in South Carolina, supporting a diverse assemblage of natural communities. The island is located between the Waccamaw and Great Pee Dee Rivers. It represents the largest undeveloped tract remaining in the Waccamaw Neck. The island is a complex of wetland and upland communities. The 1,100 acres of wetlands along the Waccamaw River, on the east side of Sandy Island, were converted to rice plantations during the 1800s. A few remnant impoundments and water control structures used for rice farming are still intact.
Our tour guide and boat captain for Sandy Island is Rommy Pyatt, a direct descendant of slaves that call this island home. Captain Rommy will share his stories of growing up in this unique environment. About 120 people also call Sandy Island home. Many of them are descendants of slaves who worked the island's rice plantations prior to the Civil War. In 1997, an archaeological survey identified 51 sites on the island, some dating back 10,000 years, to be considered for addition to the National Register for Historical Places.
